Hence economical alternatives of natural building materials are necessary for sustainable development. Hollow concrete block was developed to reduce the use of natural building materials. Agricultural waste products like coconut shells from coconut industry have disposal problems causing environmental concerns. Various studies were done in the past, replacing a portion of the natural aggregates with broken coconut shells for manufacturing the hollow concrete blocks. In this study, we have developed a new method of forming the holes of hollow concrete blocks by placing stacks of half portion of coc...

Using the Technology Acceptance Model to understand the use of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to Classroom

Deepshikha Aggarwal  Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Delhi, India Email: Deepshikha.aggarwal@jimsindia.org Abstract: In today’s world, the technology has been embedded in all aspects of human life. The education sector has been at the forefront of technology adoption. Technology-enhanced learning (TEL) is a system of education that promotes the application of information and communication technology for teaching and learning and the concept of “bring your own device” (BYOD) supports this. BYOD is particularly beneficial for the education sector due to cost saving and comfort of using personal devices. Researchers believe that inclusion of technology must be supported by the user acceptance and the most popular framework to predict user acceptance of technology is the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis. The paper describes the study conducted for the purpose of predicting the acceptance and utilization of BYOD by the college students based on TAM variab...

Pedestrian Safety on Crosswalks in India – Need of the Hour

Ankit Bansal1 , Tripta Goyal2 , Umesh Sharma3  1,2,3Civil Engineering Department, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, India. Email: 1 ankitbansal.phdcivil16@pec.edu.in, 2 triptagoyal@pec.ac.in, 3 umesh1651@gmail.com Abstract:  A paradigm shift has been observed from ‘moving of vehicles’ to ‘moving of persons’ while planning for transportation facilities in cities. Provision of integrated and barrier free pedestrian facilities is essential to ensure inclusive mobility. Pedestrian facilities are a critical component in producing a pedestrian friendly environment. In India, the present facilities provided for the pedestrians are not efficient in general and crosswalks (zebra crossings) in particular. The pedestrian casualties in India have registered an increase of 11.7 percent in the year 2017, of which 31 percent have occurred on crosswalks. Therefore, an attempt has been made to overview the level of safety provided on the crosswalks. It has been found that majority...

R. Q. A. Fernandes1, W. A. Pinheiro1,2,3, G. B. Xexéo3, J. M. de Souza3  1 Centro de Desenvolvimento de Sistemas, SMU, Brasília, DF, CEP, Brazil 2 Instituto Militar de Engenharia, Praia Vermelha, Urca, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, CEP, Brazil 3 COPPE/UFRJ, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, PO Box 68.501, Brazil E-mail: ricardo@cds.eb.mil.br, awallace@cos.ufrj.br, xexeo@cos.ufrj.br, jano@cos.ufrj.br Abstract: This work proposes an algorithm that uses paths based on tile segmentation to build complex clusters. After allocating data items (points) to geometric shapes in tile format, the complexity of our algorithm is related to the number of tiles instead of the number of points. The main novelty is the way our algorithm goes through the grids, saving time and providing good results. It does not demand any configuration parameters from users, making easier to use than other strategies. Besides, the algorithm does not create overlapping clusters, which simplifies the interpr...

Investigation of Wave Characteristics with Rotor Type Water Wave Generator

Badhan Saha1 , Mazharul Islam2 , Abu Torab, Dewan Hasan Ahmed3  123Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Dhaka Bangladesh E-mail: dhahmed.mpe@aust.edu Abstract: Wave energy is the most available energy associated in deep water seas and oceans. Therefore, many attempts have been applied to capture these energies. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of water wave flume. The water wave flume contains an electromechanically driven rotor type wave maker to generate water wave powers. The waves are constructed by different sizes and arrangements of blades which are connected to the rotor. The rotor is driven by an ac motor to generate wave. At the end of the tank a force measuring device is attached opposite to the rotor to measure the thrust of the wave. Experimental results are validated with available literature and wave theory. The results also show that the width of the blade play major role in generating wave sizes including frequency, ampli...
